Funky Llama, a pioneering community project at Theatre Royal Plymouth, was dedicated to enhancing the well-being and reducing isolation for disabled adults through participation in and creation of accessible arts events, including workshops, cabaret, and club nights, celebrating the talents of disabled artists.
As the main designer for the project's final three years, I was tasked with creating diverse, highly accessible assets for the disabled community, covering group activities, major inclusive performances, and festivals. This involved designing everything from large-scale festival banners to digital social media assets.
All designs underwent rigorous accessibility approval. I actively participated in the Funky Llama Steering Group to receive direct feedback and discuss strategies on optimising design elements for maximum inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring clarity, contrast, and ease of understanding. The resulting body of work successfully maintained the project's energetic and uplifting spirit while being fully accessible. The insights and inclusive design principles established were subsequently adopted by the wider Theatre Royal Plymouth organisation for its other public-facing materials.
